"Ghosts of the Broads" was originally issued by the Yachtsman Publishing Company in Its author was a well-known Harley Street medic and regular visitor to the waterways of Norfolk. The stories are fictitious, their supposed sources invented and the book itself intended as an entertaining romp/5(9).
I have one of the first edition books from '73, which I picked up as a child in Norfolk. As a child ghost stories really were very exciting, and the fact that my town and the stories I'd heard from adults were in this book made it moreso/5.
The trope of the pint sized ghost- that of a child- is a familiar one over the centuries and in many cultures, one that should fill us with nothing but sadness for the tale of a young life cut short.
Yet all too often films and books with stories of child ghosts and spirits (is there a difference between the two?) are the scariest. This book was required reading in a college English course I took back in called "Imaging Ghosts." I wasn't an English major but I played along anyway.
Very good read if you Ghost stories of a Norfolk parson book your ghost stories as musty as King Tut's sock drawer and the writing is expectedly astute considering the talent included in /5(2). It’s a great book Denise, the writing is quite old fashioned as I think it was written originally in the 40s, but the stories are all very rich and documented as true stories, in which case, the Norfolk Broads are positively loaded with ghosts 🙂 Like Like.

Lots of ghost stories in the book - Ghosts of the Broads. Makes for some spine chilling reading whilst sitting on the boat in the middle of a broad Miss Highlandrover. The setting was another plus for me.
I've never been to the Norfolk Broads, except in imagination, courtesy of Arthur Ransome. I enjoyed seeing the place names I was familiar with from his books in a totally different context. As a ghost story, this reminded me of M.R. James -- the same literate, understated creepiness.
I recommend it/5(4). Our ghost stories reflect the richness of our history: a ghostly Roman army tramping still in Dorset; a Jacobite plotter waiting for the day that will never come when her brother can return; Crusaders rising from a Norfolk church to fight their Saracen foe once every year.
